About Lucknow Chikan Embroidery Atelier

Established in 1952 by Ustad Nazir Ahmed, the Lucknow Chikan Embroidery Atelier has been the custodian of authentic Chikankari craftsmanship for over seven decades. Located in the historic Chowk district, our atelier represents the finest tradition of Lucknowi needlework that has adorned the wardrobes of royalty and connoisseurs worldwide.

Chikankari, literally meaning "delicate embroidery," is a 400-year-old art form that originated in the royal courts of the Mughal era. Our artisans are masters of over 32 traditional stitches including murri, phanda, keel kangan, bakhiya, and jaali work, each requiring years of training to perfect.

We specialize in creating authentic Chikan garments on finest cotton, muslin, georgette, and silk fabrics. Our collection ranges from traditional kurtas and dupattas to contemporary fusion wear, home furnishings, and bridal ensembles that celebrate the timeless beauty of this heritage craft.

What distinguishes our work is our commitment to hand embroidery exclusively – we never use machines. Every piece is meticulously crafted by skilled karigars (artisans) who have inherited this art through generations, ensuring each creation is a unique masterpiece bearing the soul of traditional craftsmanship.

Traditional Chikan Embroidery Stitches

Murri (French Knot)

Small, round stitches resembling rice grains, used to create textured floral centers and filling work. This fundamental stitch requires precise tension control and is often the first technique taught to apprentices.

Phanda (Button Hole)

Solid raised stitches creating dimensional flower petals and leaves. This technique adds depth and texture to the design, making elements appear to rise from the fabric surface.

Jaali Work (Open Mesh)

Intricate drawn-thread work creating transparent, lace-like patterns. This advanced technique involves carefully pulling fabric threads and embroidering over the resulting mesh to create geometric openwork designs.

Bakhiya (Shadow Work)

Herringbone stitch worked from the reverse side, creating a shadow effect on the front. This technique is particularly beautiful on fine muslins where the reverse stitching shows through as delicate shadows.

Keel Kangan (Paisley Chain)

Chain stitches forming paisley and curved motifs. This flowing technique is used for outlining larger design elements and creating the characteristic Chikan paisley patterns.

Taj Mahal (Crown Pattern)

Complex combination stitches creating architectural motifs inspired by Mughal monuments. This advanced technique combines multiple basic stitches to create elaborate patterns reminiscent of palace architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes authentic Chikankari different from machine embroidery?

Authentic Chikankari is entirely hand-embroidered using traditional stitches that create unique textures and patterns impossible to replicate by machine. Hand embroidery has slight natural variations, irregular stitch spacing, and dimensional quality that gives each piece character and authenticity.

How long does it take to complete a custom Chikankari garment?

Depending on the complexity and embroidery density, custom garments typically take 4-8 weeks to complete. Simple kurtas may be ready in 3-4 weeks, while heavily embroidered bridal pieces can take 8-12 weeks. We provide regular progress updates throughout the process.

Do you provide care instructions for Chikankari garments?

Yes! Each garment comes with detailed care instructions. Generally, Chikankari should be hand-washed or dry-cleaned, stored properly to prevent creasing of embroidery, and ironed with care using a pressing cloth to protect the embroidered areas.

Can you create Chikankari work on fabrics I provide?

Yes, we can work on customer-provided fabrics, though we need to assess the fabric quality and suitability first. The fabric must be appropriate for hand embroidery - not too thick, stretchy, or delicate. Pure cotton, cotton blends, and silk work best for Chikankari.

Do you offer international shipping for your Chikankari pieces?

Yes, we ship worldwide! We use specialized packaging to protect delicate embroidery during transit. International orders require advance payment and typically take 10-15 business days for delivery. Custom duties may apply depending on the destination country.
